For many years, the American Association of Suicidology presented three annual major awards (Dublin, Shneidman, Tierney). Award descriptions and recipients appear below. In addition, a student award was presented for the first time in 1996 (and renamed in 2009) and the Crisis Center Excellence Award began in 2003. New awards were made beginning in 2008 with the Durkheim Award for Exceptional Suicide Studies and the Public Policy Award. In 2009, new awards given were the Marsha Linehan Award for Outstanding Research in the Treatment of Suicidal Behavior and the Suicide Prevention Hero Award.

EDWIN S. SHNEIDMAN AWARD RECIPIENTS:

The Edwin S. Shneidman Award is presented to a person under forty years of age, or a person who is not more than ten years past the highest degree earned, who has made outstanding contributions in research in suicidology. This award was formerly called the Young Contributor's Award.

ROGER J. TIERNEY AWARD FOR SERVICE RECIPIENTS:

The Roger J. Tierney Award for Service, called simply the Service Award prior to 1998, recognizes time and effort given by an AAS member to advance the Association's principles, growth and development, and/or for applied contributions to the fields of suicidology and crisis intervention. The award recognizes broadly defined service contributions which are to be distinguished from academic or research endeavors.

MORTON M. SILVERMAN STUDENT AWARD RECIPIENTS:

The Morton M. Silverman Student Award (renamed in 2009; formerly known as the AAS Student Award) recognizes a research paper by a student. A committee evaluates the submissions and selects the most outstanding student paper.

The Durkheim Award recognizes lifelong dedication to Thanatology, extraordinary effort to advance the science of Suicidology, and tireless work to understand and prevent suicide as a means to end human suffering.
