My research is focused on the molecular mechanisms of two fundamental processes in developmental biology, pattern formation and cell fate specification. I use the simple, evolutionarily ancient animal Hydra vulgaris as a model system to analyze the roles of specific transcription factors and signaling molecules in these processes. My current work on pattern formation is focused on the specification of positional value by homeobox genes of the NK-2 family and an analysis of novel signal peptides that affect the expression of these genes. I am also continuing my analysis of the molecular basis of cell fate commitment with an emphasis on the role of conserved basic-helix-loop-helix transcription factors. In both instances my work addresses not only the molecular basis of development in Hydra, but also the evolution of developmental mechanisms and their conservation throughout the metazoa.
